Working in Ottawa
Ottawa is an unusually good market to be a tradesperson in and an unusually easy one to lose work in. Demand is steady, the housing stock spans century homes in the Glebe and Hintonburg through to subdivisions still under warranty in the south end, and there is more work than there are people to do it. Which means the shops here rarely lose jobs on price. They lose them on response time.
The winters do the rest. A cold snap in January produces a no-heat wave, a February thaw produces water in basements, and a spring melt produces roof calls — all arriving in concentrated bursts while every crew in the city is already committed. Those are the weeks where the difference between answering and not answering is most of your year.
We're based here and we work the Ontario side of the river. That's a deliberate limit: Quebec-side numbers, French-first service expectations and different telecom paperwork are a separate problem and we'd rather do one thing properly.
