Answering service or text-back?
Both catch the call. Only one of them still has the customer's attention an hour later.
A live answering service puts a person on the line, which is genuinely valuable — a human can handle the odd call, the confused caller, the one that doesn't fit a script. What most of them don't do is finish anything. You get a message. Then you're back to calling people who have already moved on.
Text-back trades the human for immediacy and for a written thread the customer can answer whenever they get a second. The thread is the difference: a voicemail is a dead end, but a text sits in their phone and gets replied to from the school pickup line.
Side by side
| Live answering service | Contractor Catch | |
|---|---|---|
| Who answers | A person, usually after 3–6 rings | An automatic text, about 9 seconds after the missed call |
| What happens next | They take a message and pass it on | It qualifies the job and either books it or hands you a hot lead |
| Customer still engaged an hour later | Only if you call back fast | Yes — the thread stays open in their phone |
| Handles unusual calls well | Yes, that's the strength | Less well — odd calls get pushed to you |
| Chases your estimates | No | Yes, that's the second engine |
| Knows your trade | Reads a script you supply | Wording written with you per trade |
| Typical cost | Per-minute or per-call, scales with volume | Flat $497/month, month-to-month |
Which one you should pick
If your calls are complicated, high-value and low-volume — commercial service contracts, say — a live service earns its money. If your calls are urgent, repetitive and decided on speed, the person on the other end matters less than the nine seconds.
A fair number of shops run both: the answering service for business hours, text-back for everything it misses and for evenings and weekends. They don't conflict.
